Living and working in London, Australian-born artist Emily Wilcock paints powerful and complex emotions. Her works are confrontational, enlivening, daring; and she is fearless - conjuring the image and presence of fantastical and yet completely real characters via painting, collage, printmaking, and drawing. Composed of fast and varied strokes, incisions, and other marks, Wilcock’s paintings attest to the both visceral and cerebral power of painting.

Figures appear bold and brilliant: some have their complex psychologies and emotions articulated by their pose, some by the gesture employed in their painting - remember, these are paintings - something which Wilcock repeatedly affirms and still disrupts - and others by their distorted anatomy. Often dual-headed, in flux, janus-faced, these characters spark discourse surrounding the internal and the external, the conscious and the subconscious, the psyche and the body.

It is perhaps because they reveal not only the subconscious, psychic emanations of the artist but also of the viewer that they are so compelling.
